What exactly are bands in radar detectors?

Ive noticed that there are 5 bands, 6 bands, 15 bands, etc, etc but what exactly does this mean. Is it the more the bands the better or what? Also I'm thinking about buying a Cobra XRS 979. If anyone has any information on it id appreciate it.


The police departments use different radar bands.

It is only better to get as many different bands if the detector can alert radar detection for as many different bands as possible at the same time.
