you definately get what you pay for with a radar detector. Range is going to vary a lot by weather conditions and what type of radar that cop is using. the newer ka band radar unit's will let that cop clock you from about a mile away. and you mentioned

You get what you pay for. If you still want to be paying speeding tickets go for it, otherwise, invest the money on one that works well enough to keep you from getting caught.

Does anyone ever have false alarms on their radar detector? i have a Cobra ESD-7000, and it works really good when their are cops. (no speeding tickets to my name, well not yet..) anyways, about 3 times the Laser detector has went off when i am just starting

All radar detectors have false alarms. Laser false alrams are usually few and far in between. I don't think it's detecting your acceleration. Some cars have laser guided cruise control which may be setting it off. I have only had two laser false alarms
